New International High School Opens in New York City
The Flushing International High School welcomed its first class of students last month. Like the four other international high schools in New York City, the new school will incorporate English as a second language in the curriculum, improving the college prospects of students who lack English proficiency.
The program is currently located at JHS 189 in northeast Queens, an area with a large immigrant population. While the school is open to students who have lived in the United States for fewer than four years, principal Joe Luft notes that one-third of this year's class has been in the country for less than three months.
Claire Sylvan, the director of International Partnership Schools, remarks, "It's wonderful. In every class kids are meaningfully engaged…They've really forged a common vision to make these kids comfortable."
The program is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a strong supporter of international schools.

"Grants that Make a Difference" is a rotating
feature profiling grants awarded to 501(c)3 nonprofit
organizations in the tri-state region (NY, NJ, or CT); the grantmaker doesn't necessarily
have to be local. The selection of grants for
"Grants That Make a Difference" is based on criteria
such as programmatic interests, geographic focus,
and size, to ensure the broadest possible representation
of the region's nonprofit sector.

a substitute for the description.
Here is what you need to include:
- Name of your funded program
- The amount of the grant (indicate if multi-year)
- Who received the grant - Your organization's name, contact person's name (if applicable), address, telephone and Web site (if applicable).
- Who gave the grant - Name of the grantmaker
- Community impact: A brief (250 words maximum) explanation of how this program is making a difference in the community.
- Your organization's mission and how it relates to this funded project.
