The Dance Theater of Harlem Receives Four-Year Support from the Ford Foundation
The Dance Theater of Harlem recently announced a $1 million four-year grant for general support from the Ford Foundation. The grant will fund the organization's school and Dancing Through Barriers, its education and community outreach programs. The grant will be used to increase opportunities for training, bring in guest faculty and choreographers, and develop a K-12 curriculum for use in New York City and all over the world.
Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, the Dance Theater of Harlem is an acclaimed dance institution in both classical and neo-classical dance, a professional training center in classical ballet and the allied arts, and through its Dancing Through Barriers, a national and international education and outreach program. "The Ford Foundation played a significant role in the founding of DTH 37 years ago," said founder and artistic director, Arthur Mitchell. "We are honored by their continued recognition of the importance and relevance of DTH's mission, especially during today's turbulent times."
The Dance Theatre of Harlem is located in a newly designated landmark district in Harlem at the Everett Center for the Performing Arts. The historic site houses dance studios used by both the company and the school.
