William J. Marino, Chairman of Horizon Foundation for New Jersey's Board of Directors, recently announced the grantmaker's first three grants, totaling $485,000. The Foundation was created on January 1, 2004 with a $10 million grant from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.
Marino notes, "The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey is pleased to announce its first three grant recipients - The American Cancer Society, The New Jersey Symphony, and The North Ward Center of Newark…The Foundation continues our long tradition of charitable giving, community involvement, and responsive corporate citizenship. Our first charitable recipients each represent one of the areas the Foundation will continue to support: health, the arts, and education."

The American Cancer Society will receive $135,000 for its New Jersey Colon Cancer Awareness Campaign.

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra will receive $300,000 over three years for concert performances, education programs, and acquisition of rare string instruments.

The North Ward Center, Inc. of Newark will receive a grant of $50,000 for the construction of a fine arts pavilion.
Executive Director of the North Ward Center, Stephen N. Adubato remarks, "The Horizon Foundation's generosity is a testament of their commitment, not only to the health of the people of New Jersey, but to the needs of all the people in New Jersey."
