Make a Connection Thru Art Cultivates Life Skills in Children
With the help of professional artists, nearly two hundred middle-school students in New York City are learning how to better express themselves through the arts, and in the process strengthening their problem-solving and collaboration skills. As part of the program Making a Connection Thru Art, resident artists from Young Audiences New York work closely with students from the Robert F. Wagner Jr. Secondary School for Arts and Technology in Queens, and Thomas C. Giordano Middle School 45 in the Bronx.
One 7th grade participant said, "I learned that there is more than one way to express myself and that all ideas are important because everybody feels differently."
Make a Connection Thru Art is part of a global youth development program launched by Nokia and the International Youth Foundation to help children establish connections to their community, friends, family, and themselves.
Rick Simonson, chief financial officer of Nokia notes, "We believe that all children have the ability and deserve the opportunity to express themselves, their views, and their beliefs to help them identify who they are as they mature and encounter different life experiences…Make a Connection Thru Art is designed to nurture this process by helping students build their self-confidence and increase their awareness of the world around them."
