Description:
The Robin Hood Foundation's grant has enabled Big Brother's and Big Sisters of New York City to expand its services to support for September 11th-affected children. Following September 11th, Big Brothers and Big Sisters developed programs for children who had lost a parent, or who needed special care because they had witnessed the attacks. Social workers provided guidance to the children, family members, and volunteer mentors by making home visits, coordinating group sessions and making referrals.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters had earlier received a $50,000 Relief Fund grant from the Robin Hood Foundation to hire support staff and to provide outreach to affected families. The additional $170,000 grant will allow Big Brothers and Big Sisters to go beyond helping the 200 children that the September 11th program have assisted.
Founded in 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the United States.
Robin Hood established the Robin Hood Relief Fund in response to the attacks of September 11th to assists victims' families, rescue workers, and others who have been affected by the economic consequences of the attacks and its aftermath.
