Independence Community Bank Announces $100,000 Challenge Grant for New Books

Struggling to meet the demand for new books in the face of budget cutbacks, the Queens Borough Public Library system has launched the "Buy-A-Book" program with the assistance of the Independence Community Foundation.

Signs have been placed in libraries all across Queens, as well as 11 branches of the Independence Community Bank, to encourage residents to donate $25 or more for the program. Donors may request a book plate for the newly-purchased books. The Independence Community Foundation will match donations with a $100,000 challenge grant.

Interim Library Director Tom Galante said, "This is going in the right direction…It may even encourage another group to come forward and make a big donation."

The Buy-A-Book program will last through September 1st, 2004.
