Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Reveals 2004 Grant Recipients
The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) recently announced recipients for two of its regrant programs: the Fund for Creative Communities and Creative Curricula. The Fund for Creative Communities supports small to mid-sized organizations that make the arts more accessible in underserved communities. This year LMCC awarded $228,000 to 81 organizations.
Amato Opera will receive funding for The Forest, an original opera composed for and performed by children from the Lower East Side.
Rising Sun Village Partners will be awarded a grant to produce Return to Africa, a presentation of literary and spoken word that is representative of the African American experience.
The Creative Curricula grants help schools, artists, and cultural organizations incorporate the arts into non-arts subjects to enhance teaching and learning. This year LMCC awarded a total of $19,500 to four high schools and one elementary school: Afro Brazil Arts, at PS 234; Make a Better Place, at New Design High School; Vital Theatre Club, at Cascade High School; Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation, at Midtown West High School; and Epiphany Magazine, at Baruch Campus High School.
In partnership with New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Council on the Arts, LMCC has regranted more that $1 million in the last five years to artists and organizations in grants ranging from $500 to $5,000.
