Joan E. Spero Joins the Foundation Center as Visiting Fellow

New York, NY — January 26, 2009. Joan E. Spero, former president of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, has joined the Foundation Center in the role of visiting fellow. During her time in residence at the Center, Ms. Spero will pursue research on U.S. foreign policy and philanthropy and will also assist the Center in a variety of ways, including consulting on the Center's research projects, participating in panel programs, and contributing to PhilanTopic, the Center's Philanthropy News Digest blog.

"We look forward to this working relationship and the opportunity to benefit from Joan's vast experience as leader of one of America's largest foundations, in government service, civil society, and academia," said Bradford Smith, the Foundation Center's president.

Before serving as the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation's founding president for nearly 12 years, Ms. Spero served as Undersecretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs in the Clinton Administration. Prior to that, she was an executive with the American Express Company and ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council. She is the author of The Politics of International Economic Relations.
