Foundation Center Focuses on the Economic Crisis

Online "MapShots," News, and Other Resources on Foundations and Giving

New York, NY — October 31, 2008. The Foundation Center has developed a new online feature, "Focus on the Economic Crisis," which provides a wide array of resources to help nonprofits and foundations alike as they face the challenges of an unstable economy.

"Focus on the Economic Crisis" is the latest in a series of web features offering easily accessible information on specific topics and current events as they relate to the field of philanthropy. It includes:

  • an easy-to-use, interactive "MapShot" that shows the geographic locations, giving, and assets of U.S. community foundations, which are a vital source of local assistance for communities across the nation
  • Foundation Center research advisories that examine foundation giving trends in prior recessions and times of economic distress, with perspectives on the current crisis and its potential impact
  • commentary by thought leaders in the field and a roundup of news on philanthropy and the economy from Philanthropy News Digest
  • links to training classes to help grantseekers become better fundraisers in an increasingly competitive environment

The feature will be regularly updated with additional maps, news, research, and other resources.

"At times of crisis, Americans look to their local nonprofits for assistance," said Brad Smith, president of the Foundation Center. "Our goal is to make sure that nonprofits and the foundations that support them have the knowledge they need to weather the storm."

About the Foundation Center
Established in 1956, and today supported by close to 600 foundations, the Foundation Center is the nation's leading authority on philanthropy, connecting nonprofits and the grantmakers supporting them to tools they can use and information they can trust. The Center maintains the most comprehensive database on U.S. grantmakers and their grants — a robust, accessible knowledge bank for the sector. It also operates research, education, and training programs designed to advance philanthropy at every level. The Center's web site receives more than 57,000 visits each day, and thousands of people gain access to free resources in its five regional library/learning centers and its national network of close to 400 Cooperating Collections.
