Foundation Center Hosts Fourth Annual
Funding for Arts Month in October

New Reports Focus on Grantmaking in the Arts

Free Programs and Services for Artists, Nonprofit Organizations

New York, N.Y., September 19, 2005—Arts organizations and artists can take advantage of a wide spectrum of educational programs, publications, and online resources aimed at helping them increase their funding during the Foundation Center's Funding for Arts Month in October.

"As part of what has become an annual tradition for a significant segment of our audience, once again this year we'll be offering a rich variety of educational programs and Web content all about funding for the arts," said Judith Margolin, vice president for public services at the Foundation Center. "Feedback we've received affirms that this special event is very much valued and in demand."

NEW PUBLICATIONS

In association with the 2005 event the Center will release several new reports. Foundation Funding for Arts Education, a first-ever study prepared in cooperation with Grantmakers in the Arts and sponsored by the Wallace Foundation, examines foundation funding for arts education on a national level in 2003 and changes in giving since 1999. Meeting a demand for information on regional giving, the Center will publish three brief reports: Spotlight on Arts Funding in Metropolitan Atlanta, Snapshot of Arts Education Grantmaking in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Snapshot of Arts Education Grantmaking in Ohio.

FUNDING FOR ARTS MONTH ON THE WEB

Focus on Arts Funding quickly guides visitors to all events, Web content, and publications relating to Funding for Arts Month.

As a special offer this year, the Center will provide one week's free access to its new online course, Grantseeking Basics for Individuals, through October 31. Through a series of interactive exercises, the course prepares artists and other individual grantseekers to identify potential sources of foundation support.

Philanthropy News Digest will release a special issue on funding for the arts and will also feature Newsmakers Interviews with John Barr, president of the Poetry Foundation, and Sarah Solotaroff, senior advisor at Chicago Community Trust.

Also at the Web site, visitors can register to receive the free e-newsletter Arts Funding Watch, delivering news, job listings, and requests for proposals weekly during October.

EVENTS AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Almost 1,600 grantseekers took advantage of the Center's Funding for Arts Month programming in 2004. This year each of the Center's five library/learning centers--in New York, Atlanta, Cleveland, San Francisco, and Washington, DC--will offer abundant opportunities for arts grantmakers, nonprofit representatives, and artists to share experiences and ideas and explore funding opportunities. Events include:

  • On October 21 in New York, the Center will present a panel discussion in collaboration with the Center for Arts Education on "Funding for Arts Education in New York City Public Schools."
  • "Development Roundtable: The Art of Funding for the Arts" will bring together leaders from local arts organizations to share fundraising experiences and insights in Atlanta on October 14.
  • The Cleveland October 6 event, "A Full Day of Forums for Arts Funding," will include "Dialogue with Donors: Corporate Foundations and the Arts" and "An Afternoon Confab" with key staff from the George Gund and Cleveland foundations.
  • Artists will have full-day training and networking opportunities on October 19 and 20 in San Francisco; "Survival Strategies for Struggling Artists" and "Meet the Grantmakers: Opportunities for Individual Artists" will be offered along with several Foundation Center classes.
  • The Washington, DC library/learning center and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies will present "An Afternoon for Artists" on October 25, focusing on proposal writing and featuring a panel of artists who have been successful in obtaining grants.

Also on the roster in all its locations are several of the Center's regular educational classes tailored to grantseekers in the arts, including "Grantseeking Basics for Individuals in the Arts," "Guide to Arts Resources on the Foundation Center's Web Site," and "Introduction to Corporate Giving for Arts Organizations."
