May is Funding for Health Month at the Foundation Center

Free Programs, New Research Report, and Online Resources for Nonprofit Organizations in Health Fields

New York, N.Y., April 18, 2005—For the third year, the Foundation Center’s popular Funding for Health Month will feature a wide array of special programs and resources aimed at advancing knowledge of the field and helping nonprofit organizations increase their funding. “With national interest in health and health care continually growing, and a significant segment of the nonprofit community working in this broad area, we are pleased to bring back Funding for Health Month to meet the needs for information, training, and networking opportunities,” said Judith Margolin, vice president for public services at the Foundation Center.

Focus on Health Funding [www.foundationcenter.org/focus/health] quickly guides visitors to the full range of events, publications, and Web resources throughout the month.

New Publications

Providing perspective on a critical area of health funding, the Center will publish Foundation Funding for Children’s Health, its first study exclusively addressing this topic. Sponsored by the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, it documents the size and scope of children’s health giving during the period 1999-2003 and includes an essay on trends influencing foundation support, authored by Grantmakers in Health executives Lauren LeRoy and Anne L. Schwartz. The free report will be available in print and also downloadable.

New editions of Foundation Center directories, National Guide to Funding in Health, 9th Edition, and National Guide to Funding in AIDS, 4th Edition, provide grantseekers and other researchers with current, relevant data on funders and grants they awarded.

On the Web

During May, PubHub: A Repository of Foundation-Sponsored Reports will point to publications on such topics as obesity in America, community health workers, substance abuse prevention, and transforming the culture of dying. Updated frequently with annotated links to online articles, white papers, and other reports, PubHub helps nonprofits and grantmakers tap into a wealth of information relating to philanthropy and the public good.

Philanthropy News Digest will release a special issue on funding for health featuring interviews with newsmakers in the field, including Stephen Peeps, chairman and CEO of the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health.

At the Youth in Philanthropy area, visitors will find stories about children and celebrities involved with health-related projects, news on timely topics, and “Fun Stuff,” with an interactive poll and food pyramid game.

Special Events and Training

Throughout May the Center will present a full roster of programs that focus on health-related philanthropy. Each of its five library/learning centers—in New York, Atlanta, Cleveland, San Francisco, and Washington, DC— will hold special classes aimed at building fundraising skills and events that bring grantseekers and funders together to share tips, insights, and information. Free classes such as "Guide to Resources at the Foundation Center’s Web Site for Health Organizations" and "Introduction to The Foundation Directory Online for Health Organizations" will be offered in all locations.

Highlights of special programs include:

  • “Growing Older, Staying Healthier: A Conversation with New York City Grantmakers and Nonprofits” at the Center’s New York City headquarters.

  • In the Atlanta office, “Best Practices and Investments in Children’s Health” with panelists from highly acclaimed Georgia programs.

  • Briefings on “Spotlight on Health Grantmaking in Ohio,” a new report by the Foundation Center-Cleveland, in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland.

  • Two full-day events for nonprofit health organizations in the San Francisco library/learning center, featuring dialogues with local funders and training on using the Center’s databases and Web site.

  • In Washington, DC, “Reducing Health Disparities—Issues and Initiatives in the National Capitol Region: A Conversation with Funders and Information Exchange.”

The Foundation Center thanks Verizon Foundation, national sponsor for Funding for Health Month.
