Foundation Center Hosts First International Philanthropy Month
Special Events, Educational Offerings, and Online Resources Throughout October
September 20, 2004, New York, NYOctober 2004 is International Philanthropy Month at the Foundation Center, the first time the Center has devoted an entire month to the information needs of nonprofits engaged in international activities. Throughout the course of the month visitors will benefit from a diverse array of resources, events, and educational offerings related to philanthropy on an international scale.
"A significant number of visitors to Foundation Center library/learning centers and our Web site are interested in finding funding for projects that are international in nature. Some work with NGOs overseas, but many of these visitors represent agencies based in the U.S. The Center offers numerous resources to assist this audience, including our soon to be released research report, International Grantmaking III," said Judith Margolin, vice president for public services at the Center. "We're delighted to be offering International Philanthropy Month as a means of addressing the information needs and interests of this particular segment of the nonprofit sector."
International Philanthropy Month offers those seeking funding for their organizations the opportunity to discover online fundraising strategies and new research tools, learn from representatives of foundations that fund in this subject field, network with colleagues, and gain insights into perspectives on U.S. funding for international programs.
International Philanthropy Month on the Web
The Focus on International Philanthropy page is designed to quickly guide visitors to events, training, and resources relating to International Philanthropy Month.
Web features during October include:
- For International Visitors, a new area for those seeking information on U.S. funding for international causes. Links are gathered in one convenient place to international news from Philanthropy News Digest; relevant FAQs, topical resource lists, and other useful tools; research reports and statistical data on international funding; and nonprofit organizations and resources in the field.
- "Highlights" of International Grantmaking III, the Foundation Center's forthcoming report on the latest trends in international giving by U.S. foundations.
- A special issue of Philanthropy News Digest, "Celebrating International Philanthropy," featuring annotated links to Web sites in the field of international philanthropy as identified by current experts and practitioners in the field. Experts represent more than a dozen organizations, including the Ford Foundation, Global Exchange, United States Fund for UNICEF, and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
Special Events and Training
At each of the Center's five locationsNew York, Atlanta, Cleveland, San Francisco, and Washington, DCa range of educational programs will offer grantseekers and grantmakers the opportunity to meet and interact with one another and with experts in the field. Several of the Center's free classes have been tailored with the international grantseeker audience in mind,
including "Grantseeking Basics for International Organizations" and "Introduction to The Foundation Directory Online for International Organizations."
Highlights of program offerings include:
- "Long-Distance Friends: Fundraising in the U.S. for NGOs Abroad" to be held in New York on October 12 will bring together panelists from American Friends of Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, Carpathian Foundation, Via Foundation, the Grace Children's Foundation, BrazilFoundation, the American India Foundation, and Africare for a discussion on fundraising practices around the world.
- The Foundation Center-Atlanta, in collaboration with CARE, will present "Focus on Nonprofits without Borders." This two-part program begins with a breakfast session on "Keeping Your International Program Legal," followed by "Anatomy of a Successful Proposal: International Programs," featuring presenters from CARE and Emory University.
- On October 27, the Cleveland library/learning center will convene a Dialogue with Donors program, "Faith in Action: Funding International Mission-based Work," featuring a panel of funders from the John F. and Mary A. Geisse Foundation, the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, International Partners in Mission, and Global Sharing of Resources.
- At the Center's San Francisco library/learning center numerous special programs will take place throughout October, including two day-long events: "Tools and Tactics for Nonprofit Organizations" on October 21 and "Supporting Ideas That Change the World" on October 28.
- In Washington, DC, the Center will present "International Philanthropy Roundtable: Best Practices and Partnership Models" on October 12, an examination of partnership models between U.S. funders and NGOs around the world, with panelists from Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, Academy for Educational Development, the Public Welfare Foundation, and Oxfam America.
