Foundation Center Publishes New Edition of
The Foundation 1000
The Most Comprehensive Source Available on the Largest U.S. Grantmakers
October 24, 2003, New York, NYNew York, NY, October 29, 2003: Nonprofit fundraisers and other researchers can now access updated analyses of 1,000 of the largest foundations in the country with the Foundation Center's new 2003/2004 Edition of The Foundation 1000. Grantmakers profiled in this volume together hold over $273 billion in assets and have recently awarded more than 315,000 grants worth more than $18 billion to nonprofit organizations nationwide.
Comprehensive Coverage in Each Entry
The Foundation 1000 offers the highest level of in-depth data available on 1,000 of the largest foundations and their grant programs. According to Francine Murray, Editor of the volume: "Foundation Center researchers put a great deal of effort into carefully updating the detailed profiles, relying on information from annual reports, IRS tax returns, the Internet, press releases, and newspaper and newsletter articles. They also contact foundation officials directly to update and verify facts." This meticulous research effort produces multi-page foundation profiles that go far beyond what is available in any other print directories or electronic databases.
Foundation Portraits feature the essential facts fundraisers need when writing a proposal, including grantmaker addresses and contact names; giving interests and limitations statements; and specific application guidelines. This section also reviews foundation purpose statements and program area details; and lists program officers and key officials.
Grants Analyses provide detailed breakdowns of grant programs. A series of tables document funding patterns by subject, recipient type, type of support, population group, and geographic area. This data gives fundraisers multiple perspectives on a grantmaker's giving program and helps them tailor their proposals to a grantmaker's interests.
Grants Lists offer many concrete examples of recently awarded foundation grants-the best indication of future funding priorities-to complement the statistical grants analysis. The section is divided into subject headings for quick reference. Each grant description includes the recipient's name, the grant amount and, when the information is available, the recipient's city and state location, the grant's duration, and a review of its intended use. Profiles list up to 50 recent grants.
Five indexes give fundraisers the opportunity to target potential funders in a variety of ways: by subject field, type of support, geographic location, international giving, and the names of donors, officers, trustees, and staff.
The Foundation Center's mission is to support and improve philanthropy by promoting public understanding of the field and helping grantseekers succeed. To achieve its mission, it collects, organizes, and communicates information on U.S. philanthropy; conducts and facilitates research on trends in the field; provides education and training; and ensures public access to information and services through its Web site, print and electronic publications, five library/learning centers, and a national network of over 200 cooperating collections.
