The Foundation Center Announces Fall 2003 Training Courses

New York, NY. July 30, 2003—The Foundation Center's Educational Services Department has announced its fall 2003 training schedule featuring full-day training courses designed to help grantseekers succeed. The Center will continue to offer the new Foundation Fundraising: An Introductory Course that was successfully launched this past spring and will introduce another new course this fall-Evaluating Funding Prospects: Strategies for Finding a Match. Grantseekers may also choose from such popular offerings as Proposal Budgeting Workshop, Developing a Fundraising Plan: Securing Your Organization's Future, and Proposal Writing Seminar. Grantseekers looking for hands-on computer training to conduct funding research can take advantage of Grantseeking on the Web Hands-on Introductory Training, Finding Funding Prospects with the Foundation Directory Online, and Funding Research with FC Search.

Foundation Fundraising Course Assists Beginners

Those who are new to the fundraising process will especially benefit from one of the Center's recent offerings, Foundation Fundraising: An Introductory Course. Attendees are introduced to the world of foundations and receive instruction on how to identify prospective funders. In this increasingly challenging fundraising environment there is a growing need for beginners to lay the necessary groundwork before seeking funds. This new workshop helps novice grantseekers gain a firmer understanding of how foundations operate and what key elements they expect to see in place in the organizations that they fund.

New Course Helps Grantseekers Evaluate Funding Prospects

Grantseekers can learn how to take the next step beyond compiling their initial prospect list with Evaluating Funding Prospects: Strategies for Finding a Match. This new course shows grantseekers how to articulate their organization's missions, goals, and programs, and how to prioritize their organization's needs in order to refine their approach to finding funding. According to JuWon Choi, the Center's Director of Educational Services: "We've added this course to help grantseekers gain a better understanding of the motivations and operations of funders so that they can determine which foundations are most likely to award grants to their nonprofit. Attendees will leave this course with important knowledge on how to develop a highly targeted prospect list and how to build contacts with potential funders."

Proposal Budgeting and Fundraising Planning Workshops Provide Practical Guidance

Proposal Budgeting Workshops offers fundraisers with limited budgeting experience the opportunity to learn more about the role of a budget in a proposal, whether for special project support or general operating support. Participants will learn how to create a detailed budget through practical exercises and case studies in budget preparation.

Developing a Fundraising Plan: Securing Your Organization's Future is designed to help nonprofit professionals identify the many avenues available for ensuring the long-term financial viability of their organization. Attendees learn how to evaluate their organization's current financial situation and develop a comprehensive funding plan that includes a variety of sources from individuals to institutions.

Proposal Writing Seminar Series Expands to New Locations

The anchor of the Center's training programs is its Proposal Writing Seminar series, which has trained more than 25,000 nonprofit professionals since it was launched thirteen years ago. Offered in sixteen cities, the series is expanding this fall to five new locations in Meridian (Boise area), ID; North Branch, NJ; Yonkers, NY; Dearborn, MI; and Fort Lauderdale, FL. These information-packed seminars instruct new grantseekers and more experienced fundraisers on how to craft proposals designed to capture and sustain a funder's attention. Guidelines on how to organize a grant proposal package, how to structure a complex proposal, the appropriate level of detail to include in a budget, and what to write in a cover letter are among the important nuts and bolts that participants gain from these in-depth presentations.

Hands-on Computer Courses Teach Crucial
Funding Research Skills

The Foundation Center's hands-on computer courses are held in state-of-the-art computer labs in a small group setting for optimal learning. Grant researchers can attend Grantseeking on the Web Hands-on Introductory Training to learn how to maximize use of the Internet for their funding research. Participants develop an organized, focused approach to funding research on the Web.

For grantseekers who wish to learn how to create the most efficient and effective foundation and grant search strategies online, the Foundation Center offers Finding Funding Prospects with The Foundation Directory Online. Staff specialists provide an interactive guided tour of the Center's foundation and grants databases on the Web. Advanced search features and techniques are explored and participants work on case studies to apply their skills.

The Center also offers Funding Research with FC Search: The Foundation Center's Database on CD-ROM, a hands-on training course taught by staff experts. Participants cover such topics as: what is in the FC Search database, how to set up searches and customize results, how to print and save, and how to create more sophisticated strategies using Boolean searching and text searching.
