The Foundation Center is pleased to announce the publication of an extensively revised and updated edition of Securing Your Organization's Future: A Complete Guide to Fundraising Strategies. This new edition will aid social entrepreneurs in accomplishing the important tasks of raising funds and laying the groundwork for long-term success in accomplishing their mission. "For nonprofit organizations to succeed in the new millenium, they need to muster both financial and human capital," explains author Michael Seltzer. "Fundraising, in other words, has broader applications than just raising money: it's about meeting the organization's immediate and long-term goals, and building a popular and active base for its work."
Building a Network of Support
Novice grantseekers as well as experienced fundraisers will learn to build a strategy that will help them create and sustain a network of funding sources. To successfully compete for available funds, a nonprofit organization needs a clear and far-reaching vision, a realistic plan to fulfill that vision, and the human and financial resources to carry out the plan. Today, an organization's constituents want to do more than just write a check; they want to become involved in the work of the organization they are supporting. This type of involvement is invaluable. The challenge is to attract and engage these types of supporters.
Securing Your Organization's Future makes the process manageable by dividing it into
three sections:
Getting Started — Focuses on the founding and running of an organization, including chapters on defining vision and mission, setting up an organization legally, building a board of directors, planning programs, and developing budgets. Each chapter outlines a step-by-step process that any nonprofit can apply to its own situation. A checklist at the end of this first section provides the reader with a summary worksheet for personal use.
The World of Money — Provides a comprehensive overview of the range of revenue sources available to nonprofits as well as instructions on developing support from those sources. The chapters on securing support from individuals cover face-to-face solicitation, direct mail, special events, using the telephone, planned giving, earned and venture income, and utilizing the Internet. Subsequent chapters provide a perspective on the array of institutional sources, including foundations, businesses and corporations, government, religious institutions, federated fundraising organizations, labor unions, and associations of individuals.
Developing the Overall Fundraising Plan — Helps readers determine the best mix of funding resources, based on the uniqueness of their own nonprofit organization. Through a series of ten steps, nonprofit leaders will learn how to evaluate their organization's strengths and assets, choose their funding partners, set fundraising goals, design diversified strategies to secure both individual and institutional support, and plan and implement their fundraising efforts. Numerous worksheets and case studies will further prepare fundraisers to formulate their plan. In addition, an extensive annotated bibliography rounds out this toolkit of resources.
