Foundation Center Sheds New Light on Nonprofit Funding in
U.S. Congressional Districts
One-of-a-Kind Search Tools Illustrate Foundation and
Corporate Support at the District Level
New York, NY — March 23, 2009. The Foundation Center has unveiled unique new search tools that increase transparency of how foundation and corporate support is disbursed in U.S. congressional districts. Grantmakers, policymakers, nonprofit organizations, and researchers will now be able to identify the funding patterns and needs of local communities in such critical areas as education, health care, and housing — more essential than ever in light of the current economic crisis.
Foundation Directory Online (FDO), the Foundation Center's comprehensive database of U.S. grantmakers and their grants, now offers users the option to search for grantmakers, companies, and grants by congressional district in addition to searching by state, county, city, metro area, and zip code. Congressional district data is also accessible by using the interactive maps in the top-tier FDO Professional, which provide a geographic display of an individual funder's grants.
FDO is available at five subscription levels and for free use at the Center's five regional locations and network of more than 400 funding information centers throughout the U.S. and beyond.
In addition, the Center's free interactive map of current data on U.S. foundation support in response to the economic crisis — almost $160 million to date — now displays how that funding is distributed at both the state and district levels.
By shedding light on information about funders, grants, and recipients by congressional district, these tools can aid public-private partnerships and increase understanding across all sectors: elected officials gain ready access to valuable information about foundation and corporate support for their constituents; nonprofit organizations can see at a glance where support is concentrated; and funders can identify areas where funding is needed most.
