New Foundation Center Search Tools Shed Light on Nonprofit Funding in U.S. Congressional Districts

Unique new search tools from the Foundation Center increase transparency of how foundation and corporate support is disbursed in U.S. congressional districts. Grantmakers, policymakers, nonprofit organizations, and researchers can now use Foundation Directory Online to identify funding patterns and needs of local communities in such critical areas as education, health care, and housing.

Foundation Center’s Electronic Grants Reporting Attracts Participation of the Nation’s Top Foundations

Nearly 200 foundations in every U.S. region and of all sizes are now participating in the Foundation Center’s expanded initiative to collect current foundation grant data electronically. More than a quarter of these are among the nation’s top 100 foundations, including the Gates, Ford, Hewlett, Packard, Kellogg, Robert Wood Johnson, Mellon, and MacArthur foundations. Electronic grants reporting ensures that the most timely, accurate information on U.S. funders and their giving is available.

Foundation Center Elects Yvette J. Alberdingk Thijm to Board of Trustees

Yvette J. Alberdingk Thijm has joined the Center's board of trustees. Alberdingk Thijm is the executive director of WITNESS, a global human rights organization that uses video and online technologies to focus awareness on human rights violations. She has nearly two decades of experience in media and new technologies, including service at the global online video platform Joost and at MTV Networks International.

Foundations Announce Expectations for Future Giving in Light of Economic Conditions

A new Foundation Center research advisory, "Grantmakers Describe the Impact of the Economic Crisis on Their Giving," examines how foundations expect their 2009 giving to be affected by the economic downturn. Based on public statements by more than one-third of the 100 largest U.S. foundations by giving and 35 other foundation and corporate funders, it describes plans ranging from raising payout rates to reducing administrative costs to cutting programs altogether.

Key Facts on Georgia Community Foundations

Georgia's 13 community foundations held assets of more than $1.1 billion in 2007 and gave over $104 million, according to Key Facts on Georgia Community Foundations, a report released by the Foundation Center. Between 2002 and 2007, there was a 202 percent increase in new gifts into community foundations, indicating their growing popularity as a vehicle for giving.

Foundation Center Releases Groundbreaking Study:
Giving by Foundations in the National Capital Region: How Much Stays Local?

Foundations in the Washington metropolitan area granted nearly $186 million in 2006 to locally-focused organizations in Greater Washington, according to the Center's new report, the first-ever study to examine locally-focused giving within a specific metropolitan area anywhere in the United States.

Foundation Funding Grew for Most Major Fields, Foundation Center Report Finds

Foundation support for eight of the 10 major subject areas rose in 2007, despite the first signs of an economic downturn in the latter half of the year, according to Foundation Giving Trends (2009 Edition). Funding for the environment and animals rose fastest, up 28.5 percent from the prior year.

Family Foundations Prioritize Giving for the Economically Disadvantaged, New Foundation Center Report Finds

Giving by America's family foundations reached over $18 billion in 2007, a 13 percent increase from the previous year, according to Key Facts on Family Foundations (2009 Edition). Among the largest family foundations, 30 percent of their giving provided a specific benefit for the economically disadvantaged.

Joan Spero Joins the Foundation Center as Visiting Fellow 1/26/09
As visiting fellow, Ms. Spero, former president of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, will pursue research on U.S. foreign policy and philanthropy and will assist the Center in a variety of ways, including consulting on research projects, participating in programs, and contributing to its PhilanTopic blog.

Foundations Commit Over $100 Million to Address the Economic Crisis, According to New Foundation Center Research Advisory 1/22/09
"A First Look at the Foundation and Corporate Response to the Economic Crisis" examines giving by close to 50 institutional donors that have already announced over $100 million in support for efforts ranging from reducing the number of foreclosures to shoring up food banks and services for the homeless.

Scholarships Available for Foundation Center Training in More U.S. Cities 12/17/08
The Foundation Center is offering more scholarships to help under-resourced nonprofits build capacity and seek funding from foundations, corporations, and other institutional grantmakers. The scholarships will cover $100 of the fee for the Center’s full-day courses in nine U.S cities.
