Three Prominent Foundation Leaders Join Foundation Center Board of Trustees

Earl Lewis, Gail Christopher, and Ana Marie Argilagos have been elected to Foundation Center's Board of Trustees. Their terms of service commenced at the April 2015 board meeting.

Mr. Lewis is a distinguished scholar and president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Dr. Gail Christopher, a nationally recognized leader in health policy, is vice president for policy and senior advisor for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Ms. Argilagos is a senior advisor to the Ford Foundation and a professor of international urban planning at New York University.

Funding for Black Male Achievement Is Growing

Quantifying Hope: Philanthropic Support for Black Men and Boys

A report jointly released by Foundation Center and the Campaign for Black Male Achievement shows a distinct trend toward increased U.S. foundation funding for organizations and programs that are working to improve the life outcomes of Black males. Quantifying Hope: Philanthropic Support for Black Men and Boys finds that in 2012, the latest year for which data are available, 98 foundations made grants worth $64.6 million explicitly designed to benefit Black men and boys. The field of education, which has historically garnered the largest share of grants, continued to be a top funding priority, but grantmaking for public affairs has significantly increased, and the top 10 grant recipient organizations consisted of a mix of national civic, policy, and advocacy organizations.

Indonesia Launches Platform for Philanthropic Partnerships to Combat Poverty and Promote Sustainable Development

The top players of the philanthropic world in Indonesia gathered on April 13 in Jakarta to discuss actions to combat poverty and promote sustainable development goals. Indonesia, along with Colombia, Ghana, and Kenya, was selected as one of the key countries of focus for the Post-2015 Partnership Platform for Philanthropy, a project of the United Nations Development Programme, Foundation Center, and a group of leading foundations guided by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. The Partnership Platform will assist philanthropists in playing a more active role in the planning and implementation of the global Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Foundation Center Launches Foundation Maps Professional 2.0 With Free Trial

Foundation Center has launched Foundation Maps Professional 2.0, the most recent version of a data visualization platform that shows who is funding what and where around the world. Two new major features have been introduced: geographic "Area Served" outlines on maps the places where grant dollars are targeted apart from the locations of organizations receiving the grants; and "Constellations" is a hub-and-spokes view of the philanthropic universe that reveals funder-grantee networks in an innovative visual format. To help potential users better understand its many powerful interactive features, a convenient 24-hour free trial is available, along with a series of free webinars with experts and developers who reveal the hidden depths of the application and its practical uses.

"Post-2015 Partnership Platform for Philanthropy" Workshop to Take Place in Bogota

Representatives from government and civil society will convene at an event on March 12 in Bogota organized by the Post-2015 Partnership Platform for Philanthropy, a project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Foundation Center, and a committee of leading foundations guided by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (RPA). The Partnership Platform, which aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), enables philanthropy to better understand the opportunities for engaging in global development goal processes and helps governments and the UN system understand the value philanthropy can bring in driving greater impact for people. The Bogota event is the second in a planned series of workshops to facilitate an exchange of knowledge and data across different sectors.

The guide, published by GrantCraft, a service of Foundation Center, tackles many themes — including investment approaches, appraisal of funding opportunities, funder-grantee power dynamics, and evaluation of results — and blends data from interviews, focus groups, surveys, and a scan of existing literature. It is supplemented by more than 30 new GrantCraft resources and a special collection of case studies, white papers, and evaluations published by practitioners and experts in the field.

Foundation Center and FSG (a mission-driven consulting firm supporting leaders creating social change) have announced that CF (Community Foundation) Insights is now operating under the auspices of Foundation Center. Measuring the State of Disaster Philanthropy 2014: Data to Drive Decisions is a new report analyzing how much foundation funding is spent on disasters each year, by whom, and for what activities. It finds that, in 2012, 234 of the largest U.S. foundations made 884 grants totaling $111 million for disasters. The report examines the philanthropic response to past disasters, explores the media landscape, and anticipates what it will take to improve coordination and collaboration for more effective disaster-related giving.

According to the new edition of Key Facts on U.S. Foundations, the country's 86,192 foundations held $715 billion in assets and distributed a record $52 billion in 2012. This annual research study estimates 2013 giving at $54.7 billion and the outlook for 2014 is for growth to continue ahead of inflation, with independent and family foundations growing at a higher rate than other types of foundations.

Philanthropy & Hurricane Sandy: A Report on the Foundation & Corporate Response examines the response of foundations, corporations, and other institutional donors to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. It finds that nearly 600 funders have so far committed more than $380 million for relief, recovery, and building. The data in the report reveal details about who provided funding and for what purposes, which organizations received support, and where funders and recipients were located. It also highlights leading organizations in the region that have been important partners to philanthropy in the disaster response.

New Website Captures the Global Human Rights Funding Landscape

Advancing Human Rights: Update on Global Foundation Grantmaking

Foundation Center and the International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG) have produced two new resources designed to advance knowledge and facilitate strategic decision making in the field of human rights philanthropy. According to Advancing Human Rights: Update on Global Foundation Grantmaking, 745 foundations in 34 countries made over 17,000 grants totaling $1.7 billion in human rights funding in 2011. These statistics are brought to life in an interactive website that enables exploration of giving by issue focus, population focus, and region and includes top funder lists, sample grants, and case studies.

The Foundation Center and InterAction (a coalition of non-governmental organizations that work on international development and humanitarian assistance) have announced a strategic partnership to promote greater visibility and understanding of global private development assistance.
