Robert Yaeger has been appointed vice president for finance and administration at the Foundation Center, effective April 15. Mr. Yaeger, who was recently vice president of finance and business intelligence at Voltari Media, will assume primary responsibility for maintaining the Center's financial health and charting its future financial strategy.

Laura Callanan Joins the Foundation Center as Visiting Fellow

Laura Callanan, an expert in the field of social innovation, has joined the Foundation Center in the role of senior fellow. During this one-year fellowship, Ms. Callanan will undertake a variety of activities to elevate work within the philanthropic sector related to leadership development and social impact, as well as help build the Foundation Center's own capacity for social innovation.

BMAfunders.org Strengthens Black Male Achievement Field

The Foundation Center and the Open Society Foundations have launched the web portal BMAfunders.org to facilitate engagement, collaboration, and strategic decision making among funders, nonprofits, and policymakers working to promote positive outcomes for black men and boys in America. The site includes a mapping tool, timeline of milestones, and a collection of research reports.

Georgia Foundation Giving Declines, Grantmakers and Charities Agree on Future Needs
2/21/13
Georgia saw a decline in the number of its grantmaking foundations and their giving in 2010, according to Key Facts on Georgia Foundations. The dollar value of grants awarded by the state's foundations fell to $778 million, and the number of active foundations also shrank for the second straight year. Assets, however, rose 8.1 percent between 2009 and 2010 to $11.8 billion, suggesting that foundation giving may have begun to recover in 2011.

Online Resource of Mexican Philanthropy Launched

Fondos a la Vista is a new searchable database of more than 22,000 Mexican philanthropies launched in partnership with the Mexico-based Alternativas y Capacidades and the Philanthropy and Civil Society Project at ITAM (Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México). The online resource provides the Mexican public with reliable, comprehensive information about domestic donors and their philanthropic activity, including the organizations they support.

Chinese-language Resources for Funders Now Available

New Reports Shed Light on Payout Practices and Expense Patterns of U.S. Foundations

Two new reports provide an authoritative, unbiased source of knowledge to help the public, policymakers, and foundations better understand payout practices and spending patterns of more than 1,000 larger U.S. independent foundations. Understanding and Benchmarking Foundation Payout finds that 46 percent of endowed foundations reported payout rates in the range of 5 to 5.9 percent, on average. Benchmarking Foundation Administrative Expenses finds that whether a foundation employs paid staff is the single most important factor affecting its expense levels.

"Reporting Commitment" Opens Up Grants Data

New Research on Philanthropy Directed to Black Males in U.S. Reveals Important Trends

Where Do We Go From Here? Philanthropic Support for Black Men and Boys is the first report of its kind to document philanthropic activity for black males. The research reveals that annual funding designated for black men and boys has been rising steadily, from $10 million in 2003 to $29 million in 2010. Education is a top funding priority for this group: between 2008 and 2010, education garnered 40 percent of these grant dollars.

Foundation Center Launches "Eye on the Giving Pledge"

The Giving Pledge is an effort that encourages wealthy Americans to commit the majority of their assets to philanthropic causes. "Eye on the Giving Pledge," a new feature at Glasspockets, offers an in-depth picture of Giving Pledge participants, their charitable activities, and the potential impact of the Giving Pledge. With a combined net worth of roughly $400 billion, the commitments made by the current 81 Giving Pledge participants could bring an estimated $200 billion or more to charity over time, representing a dramatic increase in philanthropic giving.

Foundation Giving Lost Ground to Inflation in 2011

Giving by U.S. foundations totaled an estimated $46.9 billion in 2011, surpassing the $46.8 billion pre-recession peak recorded in 2008. Yet, after accounting for inflation, contributions by the nation's more than 76,600 foundations were down slightly from 2010. According to Foundation Growth and Giving Estimates (2012 Edition), if the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation were excluded from the totals, 2011 giving would actually have gone down by roughly 3 percent after inflation.
