Kaiser Family Foundation Launches Nonprofit Health Policy News Service

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation has announced the launch of a nonprofit news service dedicated to major health policy issues in the United States. Kaiser Health News (KHN) will distribute in-depth stories, news summaries, interviews, and multimedia content for free through its Web site and partnerships with leading news organizations such as the Washington Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, NPR News, and the New Republic. Headed by executive editors Laurie McGinley, former national healthcare policy correspondent at the Wall Street Journal, and Peggy Girshman, former NPR managing editor, KHN will be staffed by experienced health policy journalists and editors and will feature contributions from leading health policy commentators and independent journalists. The Foundation Center's Digital Grant Guides cover thousands of recent foundation grants of $10,000 or more awarded in twenty-one subject areas. The specialized guides, which cost $39.95 each, illustrate the scope of foundation giving in medical research, public health, aging, homeless services, mental health, addictions, and crisis services, and other fields. Each guide also features a keyword search tool; subject, geographic, and recipient indexes; key statistics on funders; and links to the Foundation Center's free Foundation Finder Web tool — all in a PDF format that is both convenient and eco-friendly.

Parkinson's Research Online

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research created the PD Online Research Web site to accelerate Parkinson's research through open, real-time debate among professionals while building an accessible knowledge base for others to explore. Once registered on the site as members, scientists, clinicians, allied health professionals, and funders may instantly post their unmoderated comments. The general public can submit questions and comments, browse archives of research questions and papers, and learn about clinical trials and funding opportunities.

Did You Know…?

… that employer-
sponsored health insurance has become less affordable for individuals at all income levels? A new report funded by the Commonwealth Fund and published as a Web exclusive in Health Affairs finds that out-of-pocket expenses for enrollees in all types of employer-sponsored health insurance plans increased by 34 percent from 2004 to 2007, affecting the budgets of approximately 161 million Americans.
