$ 3,000 to HOME Sweet HOME Preschool to provide child care outreach and information to low-income families in Alameda Point. HOME Sweet HOME is a project of HOME, a community-based organization in Alameda that encourages local youth to initiate and implement projects that teach them real-world skills and benefit their community.

$ 5,000 to develop Health and Safety Policies and Procedures for the Child Care Community, a manual and CD-ROM for child care providers.
Children's Hospital
Oakland
$ 3,000 for the second annual Alameda County Early Childhood Mental Health Symposium, an interagency collaboration that brings together county policy makers and service providers to better meet the mental health needs of young children and their families. The 2003 Symposium focuses on young children in foster care and the justice system.
City of Oakland Department of Human Services
$ 10,000 to bring the Raising A Reader early childhood family reading program to three Even Start Family Literacy home visitation programs in the Elmhurst, Fruitvale and San Antonio neighborhoods of Oakland.

$ 5,000 to the San Francisco Foundation Community Initiative Funds for staffing and resource support for the activities of the Early Childhood Funders, an informal association of Bay Area foundations, public funders, and private donors who seek to enhance grantmaking effectiveness in the early childhood field.
Educator Consultation and Resources (ECR)

$ 10,000 in continued support for the Early Beginnings Project, a partnership with the West Contra Costa Unified School District to revitalize the preschool programs at nineteen sites that enroll children who meet the federal guidelines for poverty. Trio funds provide on-site coaching by ECR trainers who support teaching staff as they implement new practices that nurture children's cognitive, social, cultural, and linguistic development and promote kindergarten readiness.

$ 500 in continued support for outreach to East Bay grassroots grantseekers.
Joy of Sports Foundation

$ 5,000 to expand the Bay Area Starpower for Preschoolers Program, which trains teachers to provide age-appropriate sports and physical development activities in child care centers serving at risk preschoolers in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
The Link to Children (TLC)

$ 5,000 to collaborate with BANDTEC, the Bay Area Network for Diversity Teaching in Early Childhood, to provide cultural competence training to the Board, staff, and interns of TLC, an early childhood mental health intervention and training program that enables child care providers to promote the socio-emotional development of the children in their care.

$ 7,500 to the Tides center, VALA's fiscal sponsor:
$ 5,000 to bring local artists into K-2nd grade classrooms in Oakland and Richmond to work with teachers to provide multicultural arts education and literacy development; $ 2,500 to provide capacity building consultation and resources for VALA.
