The Tinker Foundation was created in 1959 by Dr. Edward Larocque Tinker. His lifelong interest in the Iberian tradition in the Old and New Worlds directed the Foundation's overall focus on Latin America, Spain and Portugal. More recently the Foundation has included in its mandate the support of projects concerning Antarctica, a region of significant interest on an international scale.

Funding Priorities
Tinker Foundation institutional grants are awarded to organizations and institutions that promote the interchange and exchange of information within the community of those concerned with the affairs of Spain, Portugal, Ibero-America and Antarctica. (For the Foundation's purposes, Ibero-America is defined as the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere.) Programmatically, the Foundation funds projects addressing environmental policy, economic policy or governance issues. Projects should have a strong public policy component, offer innovative solutions to problems facing these regions, and incorporate new mechanisms for addressing these programmatic areas. Activities may include, but are not limited to, research projects and conferences related to the Foundation's areas of interest. The Foundation encourages collaboration between organizations in the United States and Iberia or Latin America and among institutions in those regions.

It should be noted that as a small foundation with limited resources only a small portion of eligible requests can be funded. In addition, the Foundation will not consider requests for:

  1. annual fund-raising appeals for organizations such as the United Way;

  2. support for building construction or major equipment purchases;

  3. individual research;

  4. funding of health or medical issues;

  5. production costs for film, television and radio projects;

  6. arts and humanities projects including art museum collections and exhibits;

  7. endowments, and

  8. general operating support.

The Foundation also has a field research grant competition open to recognized Centers or Institutes of Latin American or Iberian Studies with graduate doctoral programs at accredited United States universities. Please contact the Foundation for complete application instructions and forms.
