Description of the Foundation's Funding Interests
Please be certain to read the Application Procedure and the list of attachments before submitting a proposal.
Since its establishment in 1958, the Taconic Foundation has directed most of its grants to programs aimed at furthering equality of opportunity in various aspects of American life. At the present time, the Foundation concentrates its grantmaking on programs concerned with housing, community development and youth development, particularly in New York City. On occasion, the Foundation will consider compelling programs or projects outside of the New York metropolitan area. In recent years, grants have averaged over $700,000 per year.

Affordable Housing and Community Development

The Taconic Foundation seeks to support efforts that help neighborhood organizations promote the preservation and development of affordable housing and livable communities in New York City. In this arena, the Foundation has a particular interest in the following:

  • Efforts to devise solutions to problems or barriers pertaining to the preservation or development of affordable housing. These problems may be rooted in or relate to local, state or federal policies or programs or market forces, but the impact of the organization's work must have relevance in New York City.
  • Organizations that provide technical assistance to help local communities participate constructively and persuasively in plans for neighborhood development or in other important conversations and processes affecting their neighborhoods.
With respect to possible grantees in the area of affordable housing and community development, the Foundation prioritizes organizations serving low-income, minority neighborhoods. At the discretion of the Board, support may be provided over a period of a few years, with the possibility of focusing on a different aspect or problem within this arena as solutions are implemented and circumstances change.

Youth Development

The Taconic Foundation seeks to support efforts to help New York City youth develop competencies that will enable them to grow academically and socially, develop their life skills and become healthy, responsible and caring adults. In providing such support, the Foundation believes in the value of long-term, integrated services at the neighborhood level. The Foundation has a particular interest in the following:

  • Advocacy efforts to increase support for high quality after-school, summer and other out-of-school time programs in New York City.
  • Comprehensive support for the educational, employment and emotional needs of young people aging out of the foster care system in New York City.

With respect to possible grantees in the area of youth development, Taconic will prioritize organizations that work to increase funding for and improve service delivery systems on behalf of those with limited options: low-income youth of color and their families. At the discretion of the Board, consistent support may be provided to a small number of grantees over a period of several years to make an impact in this field.
