Many of NESFs clients are working, but earning too little to weather the crises that come with poverty - evictions, high utility costs, loss of a job, sudden illness. Since 1970, the North Ward Center has been an anchor in a neighborhood undergoing dramatic demographic and social change.  It provides employment training to senior citizens, adult day care, early childhood care and education, and a charter school.  The Schumann Fund grant supported an evaluation of the North Ward Centers preschool program.

Although Irvington has the second highest black infant mortality rate in the state, it lacks the organizational infrastructure to provide vital health and social services to children and families.  To fill this gap, the Northern New Jersey Maternal Child Health Consortiums Irvington Family Development Center provides parenting classes, literacy training, professional development for child care workers, and health screening for children.  The Schumann Fund helped meet matching requirements for state support.

In New Jersey, 5.5% of all children under age 18 are living with relatives other than their parents - most of them grandparents.  Since 1996, the Salvation Armys Grandfamilies Program has provided peer support, counseling and advocacy to and on behalf of these grandparents.  Funding comes from community and private philanthropies, including the Schumann Fund for New Jersey.
