AREAS OF INTEREST — Youth

Program Description and Application Guidelines

The Trusts funds programs in the District of Columbia which work with youth ages 14-21. The Trusts are interested in helping young people develop their potential and make positive choices for their lives. The Trusts welcome proposals for programs serving both in-school and out-of-school youth. The Trusts give preference to requests from small, community-based organizations that work intensively with participants. Priority is also given to programs which serve youth with access to few other resources. Within the Youth category, Prince supports programs in two categories: 1. Arts, Environment and Leadership and 2. Opening Doors to Education.

1. Youth: Arts, Environment and Leadership

The Trusts support programs which help youth develop leadership and competency skills with a particular interest in the arts or in the environment. Given the Trusts significant grantmaking programs in “Arts and Culture” and “Community and Environment,” programs for youth that complement these priorities are given preference. Programs can be based at cultural institutions, environmental organizations, or multi-purpose social service agencies. Programs can develop competencies, give hands on experience in the field, or work closely with youth to develop leadership skills through project experience. Grants that provide youth with skills and experience in organizing and advocacy are also considered.

2. Youth: Opening Doors to Education

Prince Charitable Trusts support programs that offer educational opportunities to high-school age students pursuing college and post-high school vocations. The Trusts fund neighborhood organizations in the District of Columbia, and seek innovative programs focusing on helping students successfully complete high school and transition from high school to college or vocational programs. In addition to college access and preparation, the Trusts support organizations providing tutoring, mentoring, youth advocacy, leadership and job training for high school students.

The Trusts may consider a Capital Grant to an organization with which it has a prior giving history. The Trusts provide support to an organization for a maximum of 5 consecutive years (or 5 grants within 7 years). Organizations are then requested to “take a break” from submitting a proposal for the next 3 years. After 3 years the organization is eligible to submit a proposal again. We recommend checking this website before submitting a proposal after a break to be sure that the guidelines and areas of interest have not shifted.
