AREAS OF INTEREST – Health: Hospital Morale Program

Program Description and Application Guidelines

Prince Charitable Trusts are committed to providing support for programs designed to build the morale of hospital and community-based medical personnel, with a special emphasis on the human and organizational factors affecting the morale of these care-giving employees. The program is grounded in the belief that improving the morale of those who work with patients will improve the quality of patient care.

Proposed programs may focus on individual units or departments or may be organization wide. They should involve nurses and staff at all levels of the care team in the planning and development of the initiative (from problem identification to program design and implementation to program evaluation) in order to encourage ownership and increased program effectiveness. Hospital Morale programs focus on such concerns as stress management, communication skills, cultural competency training, new skills development and team building. Proposals may address immediate or emerging issues such as the crisis in recruiting and retaining nurses, improving the environmental conditions under which medical staff works, palliative and end-of-life care, and the increased stress arising from serving patients with more long term and severe illnesses.

The Trusts are especially interested in considering innovative approaches to staff morale which can provide measurable outcomes showing the impact on staff morale and ultimately patient care. The Trusts will consider support for capital projects if the applicant can show a direct relationship to the morale of staff.

Currently, the Hospital Morale Program supports morale building programs for medical staff working with HIV/AIDS patients through a grant to the Washington AIDS Partnership.

Prince Charitable Trusts in Washington, DC accept Hospital Morale proposals once a year.

The deadline for proposal submissions in 2008 is Tuesday, September 2, 2008. All proposals must arrive at the Trusts' Washington office by 5 PM or be postmarked on that date. The Board generally meets to consider Hospital Morale proposals in November.
