Background: The Foundation was established by Gustavus A. Pfeiffer and Louise F. Pfeiffer as a family foundation for the improvement of public health through the advancement of medicine and pharmacy. It was incorporated in 1942 in New York as a 501(c)(3) non-profit institution.Fields of Interest: Support of graduate medical and pharmacy school programs and projects, research in physical disabilities, nutrition, hearing and vision, and post-graduate scholarship programs administered by the institution.Types of Support: Seed money - initial funding; medical research in subject areas, fellowships and graduate scholarship programs.Administration: All written letters of inquiry and complete grant applications must be addressed to the Foundation Secretary and mailed to the post office mailing address. Faxed or email documents will not be accepted for review. General questions can be made by email or telephone.Grant Program: The Foundation makes grants of up to $75,000 to tax-exempt institutions in the United States for projects or programs for advancement of medicine and pharmacy in the stated fields of interest. The Foundation Directors meet to consider grant applications twice a year at the Spring meeting in late April and the Fall meeting in late October. Final notification of the grant application request is approximately four weeks after each meeting. Note, only 10-15% of all completed grant applications are approved at each meeting.Application Process: Interested applicant institutions are advised to request in writing the Foundation’s Biennial Report, which describes the Foundation’s programs, application process and grants. In order to apply for a grant, the Foundation requires a two-step process. First, the applicant institution is required to submit a two-page Letter of Inquiry as defined in the Biennial Report. The deadline for the initial Letter of Inquiry is January 8 and July 25. Second, if approved, the Secretary will send a letter with a formal request to apply and include all requirements and deadline.Foundation Request: Given that this a small family foundation, the Foundation strongly requests that the applicant institution does not post publicly the information found on this summary information page or information from the biennial report on its website, but uses the information internally within its research departments.Limitations: The Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications. It does not make grants for any of the following: national fundraising organizations, causes or publicly financed projects; projects involving vivisection or other experiments on animal subjects (excluding insects); individuals, dissertations, tuitions and fees for PhD or Masters programs, or individual scholarship requests; building or endowment funds; overhead, supplies, equipment, travel, conferences, exhibits, seminars, lectures, workshops, surveys or general purposes, delivery of healthcare services, sabbatical leave, indirect costs, general programs of biomedical research, and projects which are more appropriate for support by other sources, such as pharmaceutical companies for commercial applications of existing products.
