2008 GRANTS FOR LITERACY EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOL CHILDREN
The Kornfeld Foundation supports New York City public school literacy programs in the areas of reading, writing, and the arts. The Foundation has concluded its support of afterschool programs. Since 2004 the Foundation has focused on professional development for teachers, in conjunction with Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, and on in-school teaching residencies conducted by educational arts organizations.
ArtsConnection
ArtsConnection Partnerships with PS 38, 39 and 130, using artist residencies to create and sustain whole school models of thematic skills instruction and faculty development (Brooklyn). First of two installments of one-year $25,000 grant.

Brooklyn Academy of Music
Brooklyn Reads, using in-depth study of poetry anthology, (including performance component at BAM Café), with middle and high school students at Brooklyn High School of the Arts, New York Harbor School, Secondary School for Research, School for Legal Studies, and Urban Assembly School for Music and Art (Brooklyn). Second and final installment of two-year $50,000 grant.

Expansion of Focus Unit Program for Teacher Development and Student Programming, with over 100 teachers working closely with museum educators to design and implement a curriculum using museum resources (city-wide). Second and final installment of two-year $60,000 grant.

Continuing support of Mentor/Principal Collaboration, and three new initiatives, including developing comprehensive student assessment instruments for NYC Department of Education, providing additional research and development staff, and creating a resource room for literacy staff developers (city-wide).
