The success of the James H. Hall Eye Center, founded 28 years ago, is grounded in its multidisciplinary approach to pediatric opthamology.
The Center is the only private eye clinic in Georgia that provides early ophthalmologic intervention and surgical care to needy children free of charge. A group of nine outstanding ophthalmologists devoted to their patients and to progress in their field donate 130 hours average per year, and their state-of-the-art facilities to diagnose and treat children from birth through their teenage years; this highly-specialized care was valued at $108,000 in 2006. Our medical team also develops new surgical techniques and treatments for medical ocular diseases every year to advance the quality of care we provide to children.
The James Hall Eye Center is part of a team of pediatric subspecialty physicians who care for infants and children at Scottish Rite Hospital. Pediatric anesthesiologists aid in the care of patients with complex and multiple medical problems in order that care can be provided in a more efficient and expedient manner. Since other pediatric subspecialists work at the same surgical center, multiple procedures may be performed for a child during a single anesthesia event.
Without the Center many children in Atlanta and the surrounding area would not receive high quality ophthalmologic care. Outside the Center, there are only 9 pediatric ophthalmologists to serve the children of Atlanta, and very few will see non-paying patients. Patients would be treated at the university-based department of Ophthalmology at Emory. Children would also have to visit the emergency room of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and the waiting list is long at both of these locations.
