“We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.”
Jimmy Carter

W isdom and foresight guided CPA’s early leaders when the California Psychological Association Foundation (CPA-F) was first established in 1987. Recognizing that by the year 2000 California’s census would significantly change with ethnic minority groups comprising a majority, CPA-F was organized with diversity as its major focus. CPA-F was established as a 501(c)(3) organization to carry out the charitable endeavors of the CPA.

California is experiencing a dramatic shift in the make up of its citizenry.

The 2000 U.S. Census officially confirmed California’s population is now a “minority majority.” No racial or ethnic group in California forms a majority. California’s strength is in its cultural diversity.

All persons regardless of culture, race, or ethnicity have the right to enjoy the benefits of effective mental health preventative and treatment services. A drastic shortage of licensed ethnic minority psychologists exists in California creating a chasm between the mental health needs of California’s citizens and the number of culturally competent trained psychologists.

Communities must ensure that prevention and treatment services are relevant, attractive, and effective for minority populations. The full potential of our diverse, multicultural society cannot be realized until all Californians, including racial and ethnic minorities gain access to quality health care that meets their needs.
