This special area is solely for children – and their caregivers – who are waiting to visit. The Center offers children healthy snacks and an opportunity to interact with their caregivers in an area of the lobby with child-friendly features that include a craft area, video nook, book corner, and a giant pin screen providing fun for children and adults (photo at top). Mock visiting booths (photo at left) allow children to prepare for visits by role playing.
Full-time employees and trained volunteers staff the Center, which also includes a resource area for caregivers. Information on referrals to various agencies and a variety of print materials are available.
In April 2007, the Family Activity Center opened in the lobby of the Allegheny County Jail to help reduce children’s stress as they wait to visit loved ones.
The Center resulted from a collaborative effort of more than 100 grantmakers, organizations, and individuals led by the Pittsburgh Child Guidance Foundation, the Allegheny County Bureau of Corrections, and Lydia’s Place, Inc. (more details: “Advocating for Children of Prisoners: Second Report to the Community 2006” in Reports & Media section of website)
After a successful year under the management of Lydia’s Place, Inc. the Center has been integrated into the programming and operations of the Allegheny County Jail. Thus the first pilot project of the Initiative has transitioned to sustainability, assuring support for the many children and families who use it today and in the future.
