Guidelines

PLEASE NOTE:

The next deadline for Letters of Interest will be July 2, 2012.

The primary funding interest area for the 2012 grants remains projects with a public policy or advocacy focus.

In seeking to realize its vision and to achieve its mission, the Brush Foundation plays numerous complementary roles intended to expand and leverage the foundation’s impact.

These roles include:

  • Funder (providing direct monetary support to organizations)
  • Educator (utilizing website, occasional publications, etc)
  • Peer, collaborator and sharer of best practices (participate in affiliations and networks, etc)
  • Advocate (to the extent allowed by law)
  • Capacity builder (mentor to grantee organizations)

Focus and Principal Program Areas
The Brush Foundation seeks to maximize its impact by focusing time and resources on select areas, interests and audiences.

Geographic Focus
The Brush Foundation prioritizes reproductive health issues over considerations of geography when considering funding. However, the foundation has historically awarded a portion of its funds to organizations in Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.

There is no strict allocation for grants given based on geographic area, and the foundation supports programs throughout the United States and internationally (see Requirement for International Grant Applicants).

To maximize the impact of the limited resources of a small foundation The Brush Foundation does not, as a rule, consider requests from organizations or projects whose potential geographic impact is local or regional outside Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. This exclusion applies to local affiliates of national organizations such as Planned Parenthood and NARAL.

In rare circumstances the foundation will consider proposals from international partnership programs of Planned Parenthood organizations outside of Northeast Ohio.

Target Audiences
The foundation does not limit its funding to any particular demographic constituency. However, the foundation has taken particular interest in programs that attempt to provide direct services, education or training to the following groups:

  • Adolescents
  • Policy makers, legislators and community leaders
  • Professional and paraprofessional providers (e.g. physicians, teachers, community health workers, etc)

Primary Program Interests
The foundation is primarily interested in promoting and supporting:

  • Direct Service – Organizations and programs that protect and enhance people’s ability to manage their reproductive health.
  • Public Policy Analysis, Advocacy and Education – Organizations and programs that promote responsible public policy and/or public education and advocacy campaigns in areas related to reproductive health.
  • Education – Organizations and programs that advance knowledge and purposeful behavior through public education regarding sexuality within both a social and health context.
The Foundation is especially interested in programs and organizations that address the intersection of these program interests.
