Grant Application Guidelines

Nonprofit organizations based in New York City and northern New Jersey that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and fall within the program areas of the Foundations are welcome to submit an inquiry or proposal letter. (Please do not send CDs, DVDs, computer discs, video tapes, or proposals through the Internet or by facsimile.)

We recommend your initial contact with The Achelis and Bodman Foundations include only the following items:

  1. An inquiry or proposal letter briefly summarizing the history of the project, need, research, objectives, time period, key staff, project budget, and evaluation plan emphasizing measurable outcomes and specific program results
  2. Latest annual report
  3. Current and complete audited financial statements
  4. Copy of your IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exemption letter

Traditional Program Interests

Both Foundations concentrate their grant programs in New York City, but The Bodman Foundation also makes some grants in northern New Jersey, where the Bodmans lived. As shown in the prior pages, funding is concentrated in six program areas: Arts and Culture, Education, Employment, Health, Public Policy, and Youth and Families. A clearer idea of the types of grants made in the past in each of these areas can be found by reviewing the list of 2004-2005 grants on the preceding pages.

In both Health and Arts and Culture, the Foundations tend to focus their grants on leading institutions, generally where there is a longstanding relationship. In the other areas, special consideration is given to competition, self-help, volunteerism, leadership and character development, parental involvement, consumer choice, economic empowerment, independent living, prevention and earlier intervention, independent research, faith-based programs, free markets, social entrepreneurship, advancing the state of the art, measuring participant outcomes and program results, and strengthening traditional marriages and families.

Declined Categories

The Foundations generally do not offer the following types of support, nor participate in the following program areas:
  • Nonprofit organizations outside of New York and New Jersey
  • Annual appeals, dinner functions, and fundraising events
  • Endowments and capital campaigns
  • Loans and deficit financing
  • Direct grants to individuals (such as scholarships and financial aid)
  • Individual day-care and after-school programs
  • Housing
  • International
  • Films and travel
  • Projects for the elderly
  • Small art, dance, music, and theater groups
  • Independent or public K-12 schools (except charter schools)
  • National health and mental health organizations
  • Government agencies and nonprofit programs
  • and services significantly funded or substantially reimbursed by government

Proposal Processing

The inquiry or proposal letter can be sent to Joseph S. Dolan, Executive Director, The Achelis and Bodman Foundations, 767 Third Avenue, Fourth Floor, New York, NY 10017-2023. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. Each request is reviewed by staff and will usually receive a written response within thirty days.

Those requests determined to be consistent with the interests and resources of The Achelis and Bodman Foundations are examined further. In some instances we may arrange a site visit, conference call, or meeting at our office. All grants are reviewed and approved by the Trustees at one of their three meetings in May, September, or December.

Because of the high number of grantseekers and our small staff, we can only meet with a few applicants in person and fund a small number of the many worthwhile proposals received. The Foundations usually do not fund the same organization or program on an ongoing annual basis.
