Advanced FC Search

NEAR: The Fourth Boolean Operator

The Boolean operator NEAR limits a search to records containing both terms with a specified number of characters between them. It is most commonly used in Text Search.

For example, you can use NEAR to identify grants awarded to schools to purchase computers by typing computers near school. The search engine will select all records containing the word computers within close proximity of the word school.

Note: In FC Search, the default setting for this type of proximity searching is set at 30 characters. To change this setting, select Options from the top menu bar, then Preferences. You can adjust the number of characters to a higher or lower value.
