Advanced Grantmaker: The Search Fields
Grantmaker Type Use this search field to identify a certain category of
grantmaker: community
foundation, company-sponsored foundation, corporate giving program, independent foundation, operating
foundation, or public charity.
Tip: When looking for corporate grantmakers, select from the index both 'Company-sponsored
foundation' and 'Corporate giving program' in the search criterion entry box.
Field of Interest
Use this search field to identify grantmakers with an interest in a specific subject
area. The terms in this field tend to be broad terms, such as arts or health care.
When looking
at the index under the term arts, the number in parentheses says 9,530.
Subheadings under the major term arts are other, more specific terms that
you can use in a search. In other words, Arts is a broader
term, whereas Arts, folk arts is much more specific. Performing a search using
the word arts will also
pick up specific terms, such as Arts, folk arts, since the search engine is always searching on key words (in
this case, Arts).
Tip: Not every grantmaker record includes a field of interest; however, close to 51,000
(out of 77,000) of the larger grantmakers' records include this field. To
retrieve records that may not have Fields of Interest terms in their records, you will
need to use other search criteria, such as Grantmaker State or Types of Support.
Types of Support This index allows you to identify grantmakers that may limit giving to certain
types of funding. More than 29,000 foundation records include one or more types of support.
