Advanced Grantmaker: The Search Fields
Grantmaker Name Use this search field to select a specific grantmaker by its name, or by a
former or alternate name.
Grantmaker State Use this search field to select grantmakers located in a specific state.
Tip: An alternative to selecting state names from the index list is typing directly into the
text entry box using the two-letter state postal codes (ny, ct, ca, etc.). When using the shortcuts for
state codes for Oregon (or), or Indiana (in), FC Search will automatically spell out the full state when running the
search, unless you are using the OR Boolean operator with the short form of Oregon. For
example, if you wanted to search for grantmakers located in Oregon or California, you would
need to type "Oregon OR ca".
Grantmaker City Use this search field to locate grantmakers in a specific city.
Tip: Since some states have cities with the same name, you may need to add a Grantmaker
State criterion to your search. This way, the search will retrieve all grantmakers in, for
example, Springfield, Massachusetts, while excluding those in Springfield, Illinois.
Geographic Focus Use this search field to select grantmakers that have a stated interest in specific
state(s), or those that award grants on a national or international basis. Thus, the Geographic Focus index
includes the names of U.S. states, as well as the terms 'National' and 'International'.
Note: Information about geographic focus is not available in every grantmaker record (75,000 records
out of 77,000 records).
In some cases, specific
information wasn't available; in other cases, grantmakers may not consider themselves to
be 'national' or 'international' givers because such awards are a small percentage of their
overall grantmaking programs.
