Program description
One of the most critical tasks in forming a new nonprofit organization is choosing a board of directors to oversee the agency. Who should serve on your initial board? What are the most common traits and qualities that enable boards to lead effectively and creatively? Author and consultant Robert Zimmerman will explain the roles and responsibilities of successful boards and offer practical tips in recruiting, orienting, and working with board members.
Robert M. Zimmerman
Fundraising specialist and president of Zimmerman Lehman, Robert M. Zimmerman has 30 years of experience in the field of nonprofit administration in the areas of fundraising, organizational development, and executive search. He has been director of development at a variety of nonprofit organizations on both coasts, including the Youth Law Center and the Westside Center for Independent Living. Mr. Zimmerman has taught workshops for nonprofit staffs and boards of directors in the United States and Europe on such topics as major donor solicitation, grantseeking, hiring top-notch executive staff, and overcoming the fear of fundraising. A graduate of Antioch College, Mr. Zimmerman has an M.A. from the University of Michigan. He has served on the board of directors of the Golden Gate Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and was the co-chair of AFP's "Fundraising Day 2001" in San Francisco.
