Can you help me locate foundations in my home state?

Though some foundations give nationally or internationally, most foundations give within their own local area. Often, it may not be where a foundation is located, but where they give, that is important. For resources on finding funders based on where they give to, please see our FAQ "How do I find out about grants for my area of interest?" Whether you are conducting prospect research, or are just interested in foundations in your area, the following resources allow you to identify foundations by where they are located:

• The Foundation Center's Topical Resource List, State and Local Funding Directories: A Bibliography, provides information on directories of grantmakers available for most individual states. Check the Center library or Cooperating Collection nearest you for availability of specific titles. You may also be able to purchase titles from booksellers or from the publishers directly. It may also be worth looking at your local public or academic library to see if they hold a particular title.

• The Foundation Directory Online allows you to perform online searches on nearly 80,000 grantmakers. Use your state as a term in the "Grantmaker State" field. The Foundation Directory Online is available for free access at all Center libraries and many Cooperating Collections.

• FC Search: The Foundation Center's Database on CD-ROM has a grantmaker file with more than 75,000 grantmakers that can be searched by geographic location (use your state as a term in the "Grantmaker State" field). FC Search is available for free use at Center Libraries and at most Cooperating Collections.

• The Foundation Directory, and other Center directories, are arranged geographically by state. These books are available for free public use at Center libraries and in more than 200 Cooperating Collections nationwide.

• Finally, you might also check the Community Foundation Locator, sponsored and maintained by the Council on Foundations, to see whether there is a community foundation serving your local area.
