Where can I find information on writing a resume for a nonprofit job position?
Securing a position with a nonprofit organization is not very different from finding any other job. And writing a resume for a nonprofit position is similar to writing a resume for any other job. However, there are some resources specificaly devoted to resume writing for nonprofit positions, including:
- McKinney, Anne (ed.) Real Resumes for Jobs in Nonprofit Organizations. Fayetteville, NC: PREP Publishing, 2004. Sample resumes and cover letters for numerous fields and positions.
- King, Richard M. Nonprofit Careers for Business Professionals: The Complete Guide for Taking Your Business Skills to the Nonprofit Sector. Oak Park, IL: Scoville Corporation, 1992. Covers skills transference, nonprofit culture, strategic volunteerism, networking, resume preparation, and compensation.
There are also some nonprofit sites with information about nonprofit resumes, such as Idealist (http://www.idealist.org/career/resumewriting.html) and TechSoup (http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page5262.cfm). You can also check some of the job resources listed in our FAQ "Where can I find out about job openings in the nonprofit sector?"
