Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find online quotations regarding the value of philanthropy?

If you need a philanthropic quotation for a speech, paper, grant proposal, or publication, there are several electronic resources available to help put the finishing touches on your project.

Electronic resources include:

  • Charity Village's Quotations About Voluntarism and Giving (http://www.charityvillage.com/cv/ires/quotes.html) maintains a listing of quotations on both voluntarism and philanthropy.

  • Learning to Give (http://learningtogive.org/search/quotes) has a searchable database of more than 1,200 philanthropic quotations. It can be searched by author, subject, or by phrase from a quotation. It can also be browsed by major category (core democratic values, environmental stewardship, humor, and philanthropy) and by perspective (African Americans, nation's founders, U.S. Presidents, and women).

  • Energize (http://www.energizeinc.com/reflect/quote1.html) is an international training, consulting, and publishing firm specializing in voluntarism that hosts an extensive list of philanthropic quotations and offers users a chance to submit their own quotations.

  • Philanthropic Gift offers sample quotes (http://www.philanthropicgift.com/quotes.html) from its publication of over 2,700 philanthropic quotations, Words of Wisdom.

  • Deathandtaxes.com (http://deathandtaxes.com/quotations.htm) has a large section of quotes on planned giving and charity.

For books and articles containing philanthropic quotations, try searching our Catalog of Nonprofit Literature (CNL), the Center's bibliographic database. You could start searching on the subjects "Philanthropy--wit and humor" or "Fundraising--wit and humor".

Many of the books and articles found through CNL can be located in Center Libraries and Cooperating Collections. It is best to call ahead to verify a specific library's holdings. All articles, but not books, can be obtained through interlibrary loan at your local Cooperating Collection.
