The Foundation Center has established Philanthropy's Response to 9/11: Creating the Record and Telling the Story to document important information about institutional giving in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The Center has told the story of 9/11 funding through a series of research reports that examine funding patterns and place 9/11 funding in the context of U.S. philanthropy. A preliminary report of our findings was released early in 2002, and a second report was released in November of that year. Two subsequent reports, including 9/11 Relief and Regranting Funds: A Summary Report on Funds Raised and Assistance Provided, were published December 2003. The final summary data, Giving in the Aftermath of September 11: Final Update on the Foundation and Corporate Response, was incorporated into a compendium volume, September 11: The Philanthropic Response, released in December 2004.
The Center also provides access to information on 9/11-related donors, recipients, and grants made by individual foundations and corporations through our searchable 9/11 Funding Database.
September 11: Perspectives from the Field of Philanthropy, (Volume One and Volume Two), feature interviews with philanthropic leaders who offer personal accounts of how their organizations mobilized to identify needs and deliver aid in the aftermath of September 11.
Other interviews, recovery resources for nonprofit organizations, and articles related to 9/11 can also be found on the Philanthropy's Response to 9/11 page.
