Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find examples of nonprofit job descriptions?

The Foundation Center's Job Corner features current full-time job openings at U.S. foundations, grantmaking public charities, and other nonprofit organizations. Try looking at some of these job postings to get a feel for what a job description might look like. For other nonprofit job postings, please see our FAQ "Where can I find out about job openings in the nonprofit sector?".

You may also want to refer the following resources for information about job descriptions:

  • American Society of Association Executives. Sample Job Descriptions. Washington, DC: American Society of Association Executives, [199?].

  • Gale, Robert L. Leadership Roles in Nonprofit Governance. Washington, D.C.: BoardSource, 2002. Describes the roles of the chief executive and the board chair, providing advice for effective leadership and governance. Appendix includes sample job descriptions.

  • Sample Job Descriptions in Fundraising. Alexandria, VA: Association of Fundraising Professionals, 2002. Provides sample job descriptions in many areas of fundraising including annual giving, campaigns, community relations, foundation relations, development, donor relations, special events, planned giving, and volunteers. Introduction contains articles that give advice on writing job descriptions.

  • Samson, Louise. How to Write Job Descriptions. Crete, IL: Abbott, Langer & Associates, 1992. Gives examples of standard job description formats and special types of job descriptions.

For other books and articles relating to nonprofit job descriptions, try searching our Catalog of Nonprofit Literature (CNL), the Center's bibliographic database. You could start searching on the keyword "job descriptions."

Many of the books and articles found through CNL can be located in Center Libraries and Cooperating Collections. It is best to call ahead to verify a specific library's holdings. All articles, but not books, can be obtained through interlibrary loan at your local Cooperating Collection.
