The National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS) maintains a Table Wizard that gives users access to a broad set of national reports on nonprofits and charitable activities in the United States. Users can customize the report filters to select from specific types of nonprofit organizations.
According to the NCCS Table Wizard, there are currently nearly 1.4 million nonprofit organizations in the United States.
These statistics represent the most recent information available from the NCCS.
A May 2005 article from the NonProfit Times indicates that the number has recently risen to more than one million 501(c)(3) organizations. However, the article states that this does not count those organizations with income of less than $25,000 (and therefore did not have to file the Form 990 with the IRS), pointing out that the true number is larger.
