Where can I find information on employee salaries and compensation in the nonprofit sector?

There are a number of resources that focus on employee compensation in nonprofit organizations. Listed below are several that may be found at Center Libraries and at some Cooperating Collections. Also included are Web sites that may contain additional information on this topic.

• Abbott, Langer & Associates publishes and sells an annual survey entitled "Compensation in Nonprofit Organizations," which includes statistics and figures on compensation in nonprofit organizations. Also available is the "Special Nonprofit Policies & Practices - 2003" survey.

• The Council on Foundations publishes an annual Grantmakers Salary Report that can be viewed in its entirety by Council members. Those who are not Council members can view the Executive Summary for the 2005 Grantmakers Salary and Benefits Report (in PDF format).

• The Chronicle of Philanthropy publishes an annual salary survey in September or October. You must subscribe to the Chronicle to access the survey online.

• The Nonprofit Times publishes an annual salary survey in its February issue.

• The Wall Street Journal has a searchable database of salary tables and articles of interest.

• GuideStar's Nonprofit Compensation Reports and GuideStar Salary Search provide salary information from nonprofit Forms 990 and 990-EZ. Ordering information is available through these links.

• IEG maintains a salary survey for those involved in corporate sponsorship. (Free registration is required in order to view the survey.)

• JobStar, a California-based job information project, provides a listing of salary surveys, including a section for nonprofits.

• Board Source (formerly the National Center for Nonprofit Boards) publishes Chief Executive Compensation: A Guide for Nonprofit Boards.

• "Alternative Retirement Benefits for Key Executives of Non-Profits." by Thomas J. Raffa is hosted by IKNOW.org.

• The National Council of Nonprofit Associations has a listing of state and national nonprofit salary reports available.

For more information on compensation of employees in the nonprofit sector, try searching our Catalog of Nonprofit Literature (CNL), the Center's bibliographic database. You could start searching on the subjects "Nonprofit organizations--wages", "Nonprofit organizations--employee benefits", "Foundations--wages", or "Foundations--employee benefits".

Many of the books and articles found through CNL can be located in Center Libraries and some Cooperating Collections. It is best to call ahead to verify a specific library's holdings.
