Giving in the Aftermath of the Gulf Coast Hurricanes
August 2007

U.S. foundations and corporations have committed more than $1 billion in cash and in-kind giving for relief, recovery, and rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, according to the Foundation Center's new report, Giving in the Aftermath of the Gulf Coast Hurricanes. The report provides the most comprehensive record available of the resources that institutional donors provided in response to the Gulf Coast hurricanes. It also includes an analysis of interviews with 10 of the top 25 independent foundations that responded to the disaster.
Key findings include:
- Corporate giving accounted for the majority of cash giving by institutional donors — $519 million, or 57 percent.
- Corporate giving focused more on immediate relief, while foundations focused more on recovery and rebuilding.
- The South rallied to take care of its own: grantmakers in just five Southern states — Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, Virginia, and Louisiana — collectively accounted for over one-fifth or 21.6 percent of the institutional response to the disaster.
- Most giving (83 percent) went to intermediary organizations outside of Louisiana and Mississippi.
- Religiously affiliated organizations received over one-fifth of total disaster response contributions from institutional donors whose giving was tracked in this study.

Giving in the Aftermath of the Gulf Coast Hurricanes: Report on the Foundation and Corporate Response
August 2006

In response to last summer's Gulf Coast hurricanes, U.S. foundations and corporations have committed more than $577 million for relief, recovery, and rebuilding. This report documents actual commitments announced by the nation's corporations and foundations and results from a survey of the nation's largest independent, corporate, and community foundations.
Overview
Giving in the Aftermath of the Gulf Coast Hurricanes: Report on the Foundation and Corporate Response provides an overview of foundation and corporate activities in response to the Gulf Coast hurricanes, drawn from data compiled by the Foundation Center up to June 2006. Reflecting differences in sources of information, the report offers two distinct and complementary views of giving. The first part of the report, which is based on a 2006 survey of larger private and community foundations, focuses on grantmaker practices, such as how funders paid for hurricane response funding, what impact it has had on their other programs, and how likely they are to fund other disasters. The second part, which is based on actual grant commitments tracked by the Foundation Center in our Gulf Coast response database, examines the scope, purposes, and recipients of hurricane response giving by foundations and corporations. Together these analyses provide the most comprehensive portrait available of institutional support for Gulf Coast relief, recovery, and rebuilding.
