Foundations' Year-end Outlook for Giving and the Sector

Foundation giving will likely decline by more than 10 percent in 2009 according to survey findings released by the Foundation Center. Based on responses of close to 600 foundations, Foundations' Year-end Outlook for Giving and the Sector also finds that continued reductions are expected in 2010. However, more than three-quarters expect that the field of philanthropy will become more strategic as a result of having weathered the crisis.

Foundations Address the Impact of the Economic Crisis

This new research advisory, the latest in a series that sheds light on the impact of the economic downturn on the nonprofit sector, examines how U.S. foundations are coping with the crisis. The findings are based on early 2009 survey responses of more than 1,200 U.S. foundations. Close to two-thirds of the respondents expect to reduce their grants in 2009, the survey finds, and over half said that they will rely on more non-grantmaking activities in their support for nonprofits.
