OECD Funding for Education in Developing Countries

Education for a Global Society

“Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.”

— Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan

“At this defining moment in our history, America faces few more urgent challenges than preparing our children to compete in a global economy.”

— Obama–Biden Agenda for Education

What are we doing about it?

  • Large U.S. foundations committed nearly $5 billion to education in 2007
  • Of the nearly $5 billion,94% was spent domestically
  • Giving to education has more than doubled domestically since 1997 and more than quadrupled internationally
  • Education received the largest share of foundation support in 2007
  • Foundation support represents less than 1% of total spending on the U.S. public school system alone

Which leads us to ask...

  • Where is it being spent?
  • What innovative programs and initiatives are being funded?
  • What impact is it having?
