MapShot: Foundations Respond to the Economic Crisis

About the Map

In these tough economic times, the Foundation Center is eager to provide ready access to information that will help nonprofits and foundations alike as they respond to increased needs.

To that end, the Center is collecting and making available the most recent data on U.S. foundation support to aid those affected by the crisis. Using this interactive map, you can explore information on current grants and program-related investments (loans and investments made to support charitable activities).

The map illustrates the geographic areas, types of services and organizations, and fields of activity that received this support, for purposes that include food assistance, employment services, health care, and housing and shelter, including foreclosure prevention.

New data is added each week, drawn from a variety of sources including grants lists submitted by foundations, funder web sites, media outlets, and other publicly available information. We encourage grantmakers to send announcements about grants or PRIs related to the economic crisis directly to Matthew Ross at

How to Use the Map

To use the map, choose the Recipient Type or Primary Subject tab. Click on a state to drill down to see grant totals by county, city, ZIP code, or congressional district. Click to the next level to see grant recipients in that region. Click on a recipient name to see a list of its grants and to view the detail of each grant. Narrow your search by selecting an individual year or multiple years and individual or multiple subjects.
