New! Mapping and Charting
If you're an FDO Professional subscriber, it's time to focus your fundraising strategy like never before. Now you can map and chart the distribution of a funder's recently awarded grants! Our interactive mapping tool enables you to view grant dollars on a U.S. or world map and drill down to see disbursements by county, city, or ZIP code. Our interactive charting tool enables you to view a bar chart breakdown of grants by recipient type or primary subject and drill down to second and third levels of detail. To access these new features, look for the Map Grants and Chart Grants tabs at the top of FDO's grantmaker records.
The data used to map and chart grants in FDO is based on the data in our Search Grants database. This means that approximately 20,000 of the largest foundations include mapping and charting functionality and a total of over one million grants can be mapped and charted.
These new features make it easier than ever to analyze a funder's giving priorities. Use them to clarify your understanding of a grantmaker's geographic focus or fields of interest and to identify the strongest prospects for your fundraising efforts. Plus, maps and charts look great in presentations to your board or other groups.

Mapping and Charting: Top Five Tips
 |
 |
FDO's new interactive tools help you map your path and chart your course to grantseeking success. To take full advantage of everything these exciting next-generation features have to offer, check out this list of our top five mapping and charting tips:
- Our new mapping and charting tools were designed to be interactive. Use the check boxes and radio buttons on the left side of the screen to change the map view and chart view parameters. (See example at right, top.) Use the Recipient Type and Primary Subject tabs at the top of the screen to toggle between each.
- Moving your mouse over any map area or chart column will display the total grant dollar amount, total number of recipients, and total number of grants. (See example at right, bottom.) Tables below the maps and charts also display this aggregated data.
- You can continue drilling down to recipient lists, grant lists, and finally grant records. For maps, click on a county, city, or ZIP code range on a state map or a country on a world map. For charts, click on a column in a third-level recipient type or primary subject chart.
- It's easy to return to a previously viewed map, chart, or list. Just click the appropriate link in the navigation line at the top or bottom of the screen.
-
Maps, charts, and tables can be copied, printed, saved, and exported. Look for the tools at the top of the mapping and charting screens.
Choose Your View!
Have you noticed the new format options at the top of FDO's grantmaker profiles? Our "Standard View" option features all of the great improvements we made to FDO's profiles earlier in the year: an At A Glance section displaying key information, individual sections for each major part of the profile, "Jump To" links for easy navigation to each individual section, and more. Our "Compact View" option includes the same great data presented in an economical layout designed to minimize on-screen scrolling and decrease the amount of paper required when printing.
FDO's default profile format is Standard View. To switch views for the remainder of your current session, simply click the Compact View link at the top of any grantmaker profile. To switch back at any time, click the Standard View link.
Many of you requested these options following our redesign. We thank you for your suggestions and feedback! You've helped us make Foundation Directory Online the nation's leading research tool for grantseekers and we'll continue to solicit your views to make sure we keep it as user-friendly as possible.
