Opportunity for education innovation often occurs in the out-of-school time space. Grantmakers nationwide have made substantial investments in out-of-school time (OST)/afterschool programs/expanded learning opportunities aimed at improving academic, college and career-ready, and civic outcomes for students. Indeed, a recent report from Grantmakers for Education, "Benchmarking 2010: Trends in Education Philanthropy," indicates that 67% of survey respondents currently fund in these areas. To shed light on efforts under way to advance learning beyond the classroom, we have invited two grantmakers and an education policy researcher to discuss lessons learned and provide insight into the opportunities and challenges of scaling up effective practices in learning outside of the traditional classroom in the current policy environment. Questions addressed include:

  • How is OST/afterschool learning/expanded learning opportunities currently being defined?
  • What is the potential impact of the federal/state/local budget cuts?
  • What are the current opportunities and challenges?
  • What are lessons learned linking with school-day learning and partnering with schools?
  • What are the components of effective initiatives?
  • What are some best practices for establishing and sustaining supportive community partnerships?
  • What metrics and assessment tools are being used to measure the impact on student outcomes?
  • How can grantmakers support public policy/advocacy efforts?

  • Gwynn Hughes, Program Officer, Pathways Out of Poverty, C.S. Mott Foundation
  • Dara Rose, Senior Officer, Communities, The Wallace Foundation
  • Elena Silva, Senior Policy Analyst, Education Sector
