Electronic Resources for Finding Funders: Introduction to Foundation Directory Online, Guide to Resources on the Foundation Center's Website, and Prospect Research Basics

Cleveland

Find out how to use one of the Foundation Center's most comprehensive resources to identify funders for your programs, and find out the answers to the most frequently asked questions about researching individual donors.

Do you need to secure funding for your programs? Join us for this session in our computer lab for a hands-on introduction to the Foundation Center's comprehensive Web subscription databases, Foundation Directory Online Professional. We will teach you how to:

  • Create customized searches to develop targeted lists of foundations that will match your organization's funding needs
  • Search grants made by top funders
  • Run full-text, keyword searches of tax returns
  • Maximize search results with insider tips and strategies for mining the database

This class will also introduce you to the resources available on our web site and show you how to get the most out of them. Learn about the capabilities of our search tools, explore the rich content available on fundraising and proposal writing, and learn how to access and understand a foundation's 990-PF.

Following this, we will delve into the world of individual donors. If you've been trying to find information on prospective individual donors, you’ve probably discovered that the process can be more difficult than researching institutional grantmakers. This class will answer the following questions:

  • How can you compile a list of potential donors?
  • What strategies should you use to research the individuals on your list?
  • What kind of information is relevant?
  • What free information sources are available on the Web?
  • What ethical standards must be applied when finding out information about individuals?
